ศูนย์ศิลปะตูดยุงมีความยินดีในการนำเสนอนิทรรศการ ผลงานประติมากรรมครั้งแรกในรอบปี ของประติมากรร่วมสมัยไทย “สมหมาย มาอ่อน” กับผลงานชุด “หวนคนึงหา” ด้วยการผสมผสานกันของผลงานบางส่วนจากอดีต กับผลงานชุดใหม่ล่าสุด ให้นำเสนอและถ่ายทอดผลงานประติมากรรมที่ถูกสร้างสรรค์ขึ้นอย่างบรรจง
ตัวประติมากรรมเหล่านั้น บอกเล่าถึงเรื่องราวในอดีตของไทยและนิทานพื้นบ้านอันเป็นอมตะ ผ่านวัสดุที่ศิลปินได้เลือกนำมาใช้จากธรรมชาติ และเป็นวัสดุที่ใช้ในงานฝีมือช่างไทยมาแต่อดีต อย่างดินจากสุโขทัย ไม้สักเก่าที่หาได้ในชุมชนท้องถิ่น และผงสีจากธรรมชาติ อาทิ ขมิ้น หรือ ปูนขาว ศิลปินได้ใช้วัสดุเหล่านั้นใช้ในการสร้างรูปทรงและรายละเอียดผลงานประติมากรรม ความสง่างามและเส้นอย่างเรียบง่ายในรูปทรงผลงาน แสดงให้เห็นถึงความรุ่งเรืองและงดงามของวัฒนธรรมไทยในอดีต ด้วยเนื้อหาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพุทธศาสนา เรื่อง ความไม่จีรังยั่งยืน
สำหรับผลงานล่าสุดของสมหมาย มาอ่อน ชุด“ความทรงจำจากวัยเยาว์” นั้น ศิลปินได้ทำงานร่วมกับหญิงชาวบ้านในชุมชนผลิตเครื่องปั้นดินเผาทุ่งหลวง อำเภอคีรีมาศ จังหวัดสุโขทัย โดยได้สร้างรูปทรงผลงานตามความทรงจำของศิลปิน จากนิทานก่อนนอนเมื่อครั้งเยาว์วัย เป็นการถ่ายทอดท่วงท่าวิถีการดำเนินชีวิตชาวบ้าน เพื่อฉายให้เห็นภาพอันชวนหลงใหลของนิทานพื้นบ้าน ฝีมือช่าง และประเพณีที่ยังคงสืบสานดำรงอยู่ในปัจจุบัน นอกจากนั้น ศิลปินยังได้นำลูกกระสุนดิน ที่ชาวบ้านทำไว้สำหรับไล่นกกา มาสร้างผลงานเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงการมีสติและสมาธิกับความเป็นปัจจุบัน
นิทรรศการครั้งนี้เปิดให้เข้าชมได้ตั้งแต่วันที่ 16 มีนาคม ถึง 11 พฤษภาคม 2562
เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน
สมหมาย มาอ่อน สำเร็จการศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ปัจจุบันเป็นประติมากรที่มีชื่อเสียงเป็นที่รู้จักและอาจารย์ประจำสาขาทัศนศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร จังหวัดพิษณุโลก เคยอาศัยอยู่ในมลรัฐแคลิฟอร์เนียและเนวาด้าเกือบยี่สิบปี หลังจากนั้น จึงย้ายกลับมายังถิ่นฐานบ้านเกิด หวนกลับสู่ความคุ้นเคยในวิถีพื้นเพเดิมของตน
แสดงผลงานผ่านนิทรรศการหลายครั้งใน ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เช่น ที่ LA Artcore เมืองลอสแองเจลลิส มลรัฐแคลิฟอร์เนีย และพิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะแห่งเมืองลาสเวกัส มลรัฐเนวาด้า ได้รับรางวัลหลายครั้ง อาทิ รางวัลผลงานยอดเยี่ยม Asian Art Now 2001 รวมทั้งยังมีนิทรรศการแสดงผลงานประติมากรรมในประเทศไทยหลายครั้ง เช่น ที่หอศิลป์แห่งชาติ หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมเมืองเชียงใหม่ หอศิลป์แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ และหอศิลป์มหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร จังหวัดพิษณุโลก เป็นต้น
ผลงานของสมหมาย ถูกเก็บสะสมโดยองค์กรสถาบันและบุคคลหลายแห่ง รวมทั้งสมาคมสถาปนิกสยามในพระราชูปถัมภ์ ธนาคารกสิกรไทย สำนักงานใหญ่ บริษัท โตชิบา (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด ดร.กมล สมวิเชียร และนายสมชาย อาชวานันทกุล

Reminiscence by Sommai Ma-on

The Toot Yung Art Center is proud to include for the first time this year Thai contemporary sculptor Sommai Ma-on as one of its represented artists. “Reminiscence”, a selection of old and recent works, will give an overview of the artist’s refined body of works.
Sommai’s sculptures are infused with Thai history and folk tales inducing an ageless feel. The materials are sourced from the nature and resonate with ancestral craft techniques and history. Clay from the Sukhotai grounds, teak wood from primary Thai forests, natural pigments such as turmeric or crushed bones are elements commonly found in Sommai’s sculptures. The elegant and simple lines of his works are also a memoir of Thailand’s rich cultural past, with features often evoking Buddhism, death and ephemerality.
In his most recent work, “Procession from my childhood”, Sommai worked with local craft women from Thung Luang terra cotta community, bringing to shape figures emerged from his childhood’s bedtime stories. The lyrical procession of animals and villagers emanate all the charm of past folk tales and ancestral craftsmanship, keeping the long tradition alive. These women also craft small terra cotta marbles used by the farmers to chase away the birds. Sommai plays with hundreds of these basic shaped beads to convey metaphysical concepts of the body and its impermanence.
Reminiscence” by Sommai Ma-on will be on view at Toot Yung Art Center from March 16th until May 11th 2019. “
About Sommai Ma-On
A graduate of Silapakorn University, Sommai Ma-on is now a recognized sculptor and professor at the Naresuan University of Phitsanulok.
Based in California for over two decades, Sommai returned only recently to his native region, reconnecting with his roots and culture.
He has exhibited his works several times in California, at the LA Artcore, Los Angeles, and the Las Vegas Art Museum, receiving prestigious prize such as the Excellent Work Achievement Award, Asian Art Now (2001). He has showcased his works extensively in Thailand at the National gallery, the University galleries of Chiang Mai and Phitsanulok.
His works can be found in the collections of The Association of Siamese Architects Under Royal Patronage, Kasikorn Bank, Toshiba Thailand Company, PHD Professor Somvichien Kamol and Mr. Achavanuntakul Somchai: Honorary Chairman of Asian Engineering Consultant Corp.,Ltd.
