จากภาพวาดอายุนับร้อยปีที่ได้มาจากตลาดนัดขายของเก่า สู่ผลงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยจัดแสดงในของแกลเลอรีสีขาว ปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะของธวัชชัย สมคง ได้ชุบชีวิตจิตรกรผู้ล่วงลับเหล่านี้ และนำพวกเขากลับมามีตำแหน่งแห่งที่อีกครั้งในโลกปัจจุบัน โลกที่นิยามของงานศิลปะถูกยกระดับจากงานฝีมือชิ้นเยี่ยมสำหรับตกแต่งบ้านคนรวย กลับกลายเป็นสิ่งที่ถูกรับรู้และยอมรับในบริบทเฉพาะตัวอันห่างไกลจากนิยามในอดีต
ย้อนกลับไปในปี 2014 ธวัชชัยมีแนวคิดที่จะสร้างสรรค์ผลงานชุดใหม่จากภาพวาดเก่าที่เขารวบรวมมาจากที่ต่างๆ ตั้งแต่ในโลกออนไลน์อย่างเว็บไซต์ ebay.com ไปจนถึงตลาดนัดขายของเก่าที่อิตาลี ภาพวาดเหล่านี้ผ่านการคัดเลือกอันเนื่องมาจากความสนใจส่วนตัวของศิลปินเอง อาจด้วยความประทับใจในเรื่องราวที่ถูกถ่ายทอด เทคนิคการวาดอันชาญฉลาด หรือการจัดวางองค์ประกอบที่ดึงดูดความสนใจ แต่จุดร่วมเดียวกันของทุกภาพ ก็คือศักยภาพในการจุดประกายทางความคิดที่เขาจะสามารถต่อยอดต่อไปได้ ซึ่งในมุมมองของธวัชชัยเอง ภาพวาดเหล่านี้ก็เหมือนกับว่ากำลังรอคอยให้เขาลงมือทำอะไรสักอย่างกับมันด้วยเช่นกัน
กระบวนการอันหลากหลายที่ศิลปินเลือกใช้จัดการกับภาพวาดเก่า แสดงให้เห็นพัฒนาการทางความคิดที่เปลี่ยนไป จากการพยายามสอดแทรกตัวบทใหม่ๆ ลงไปแต่งเติมสาระให้กับภาพโดยยังคงรักษาบรรยากาศดั้งเดิมเอาไว้ให้ได้มากที่สุด ไปสู่การตีความโครงสร้างของภาพทั้งในเชิงองค์ประกอบ เทคนิคการวาด และการเล่าเรื่อง ก่อนจะแก้ไขดัดแปลงเสียใหม่ ให้กลายเป็นผลงานที่มีความแตกต่างไปจากเดิมอย่างชัดเจน
อีกนัยหนึ่ง ปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะทั้งหมดนี้เปรียบได้กับการลบเลือนเส้นแบ่งกาลเวลา และนำวัตถุทางศิลปะจากอดีตกลับคืนสู่พื้นที่ของความเป็นร่วมสมัยอีกครั้ง ซึ่งมิใช่ด้วยฝีมือของใครคนใดคนหนึ่ง แต่เกิดขึ้นได้ภายใต้นามของผู้สร้างทั้งสองคน นั่นคือศิลปินยุคเก่าและตัวของธวัชชัยเอง.
เกี่ยวกับศิลปิน
ธวัชชัย สมคง เกิดที่จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน จบการศึกษาในระดับ Post–Diploma in Fine Art (Painting) มหาวิทยาลัยวิศวภารตี สันตินิเกตัน ประเทศอินเดีย ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2527 เป็นต้นมา ธวัชชัยมีผลงานการจัดแสดงผลงานศิลปะมากมาย ในปี พ.ศ. 2546 เขาได้ก่อตั้งนิตยสารศิลปะ Fineart Magazine เพื่อเผยแพร่เรื่องราวในแวดวงศิลปะทั้งไทยและต่างประเทศ ธวัชชัยยังเป็นบรรณาธิการบริหารหนังสือแปลฉบับภาษาไทยของหนังสือศิลปินเล่มสำคัญอีกหลายเล่ม เช่น ว่าด้วยเรื่องศิลปะ (The Story of Art) ของสำนักพิมพ์ Phaidon, 1001 ภาพเขียนที่ต้องเห็นก่อนตาย (1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die) ของสำนักพิมพ์ Quintessence เป็นต้น
ด้วยความเชี่ยวชาญในงานด้านศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย ทำให้ธวัชชัยได้รับความไว้วางใจให้ทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมการให้กับหน่วยงานและสถาบันด้านศิลปะหลายแห่ง เช่น พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานคร ตลอดจนเป็นกรรมการตัดสินในเวทีการประกวดศิลปกรรม เช่น โครงการจินตนาการ สืบสาน วรรณกรรมไทย โดย บริษัท อินทัช โฮลดิ้ง จำกัด (มหาชน) โครงการยกย่องเชิดชูเกียรติศิลปินร่วมสมัยดีเด่น รางวัลศิลปาธร โดยสำนักงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม เป็นต้น
ในด้านภัณฑารักษ์ ธวัชชัยมีประสบการณ์คัดสรรนิทรรศการต่างๆ มาแล้วมากมายทั้งในประเทศไทยและต่างประเทศ อาทิ นิทรรศการ โลกยังคงหมุนไป (The Revolving World) สำหรับศาลาไทยในมหกรรมศิลปะนานาชาติ เวนิส เบียนนาเล่ ครั้งที่ 58 ณ เมืองเวนิส ประเทศอิตาลี (พ.ศ. 2562) และเป็นหนึ่งในคณะภัณฑารักษ์ของโครงการการแสดงศิลปกรรมร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ Thailand Biennale, Korat 2021 ณ จังหวัดนครราชสีมา (พ.ศ. 2564) นอกจากนี้ ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2563 ถึงปัจจุบัน ธวัชชัยยังเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งและผู้บริหารของพื้นที่ทางศิลปะ MATDOT Art Center กรุงเทพ
เกี่ยวกับแมตดอท อาร์ต เซนเตอร์
แมตดอท อาร์ต เซนเตอร์ คือพื้นที่ทางศิลปะ ณ ย่านเมืองเก่าใจกลางกรุงเทพมหานคร ก่อตั้งโดยคุณธวัชชัย สมคง บรรณาธิการบริหารนิตยสารไฟน์อาร์ท เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2563 เพื่อเป็นพื้นที่เชื่อมต่อระหว่างผู้คนในโลกศิลปะ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นศิลปิน ภัณฑารักษ์ นักสะสมงานศิลปะ นักศึกษา หรือผู้รักงานศิลปะ ภายในกลุ่มอาคารสามหลังย่านถนนหลานหลวง พื้นที่ใช้สอยอันหลากหลายตั้งแต่คาเฟ่ สตูดิโอ ห้องประชุมอเนกประสงค์ ห้องทำงานส่วนรวม ไปจนถึงห้องพัก เปิดโอกาสให้ทุกคนได้เข้ามาใช้เวลาร่วมกันเพื่อสร้างสรรค์สิ่งใหม่ๆ หรือแม้แต่การขยายความร่วมมือไปยังชุมชนภายนอกทั้งในไทยและต่างประเทศ
นอกจากผลงานศิลปะที่สอดแทรกอยู่ในทุกซอกทุกมุมของพื้นที่ที่ได้รับการออกแบบมาเป็นอย่างดีผ่านสายตาของภัณฑารักษ์ ภายในอาณาบริเวณของแมตดอทยังประกอบไปด้วยห้องแสดงนิทรรศการสองแห่ง ที่มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อเป็นทางเลือกในการนำเสนอศิลปินไทยและศิลปินนานาชาติให้เกิดการแลกเปลี่ยนเรียนรู้อย่างกว้างขวาง ได้แก่ Blacklist Gallery สำหรับจัดนิทรรศการหมุนเวียนโดยศิลปินที่ได้รับเชิญให้เข้ามาทำงานร่วมกับเรา และ Matdot Gallery สำหรับแสดงผลงานของศิลปินในพำนัก

These hundreds of years old paintings purchased from antique flea markets are a congruent part of an exhibition of contemporary art at the white gallery as part of an art rescue operation by Tawatchai Somkong. Works by unknown artists of eras gone by are brought back to life and made a part of the modern world where art is not just a home décor for the wealthy, a norm that is a far cry from art’s definition in the past.
An idea came to Tawatchai in 2014 when he thought about producing a collection of works with various old paintings he has collected over time from numerous sources, like online websites such as ebay and even antique flea markets in Italy. Each painting was personally selected for the story they convey, their brilliant techniques, and intriguing composition. The one important key all the paintings contain, though, is their ability to spark ideas within him. For Tawatchai, it is as if the paintings themselves are waiting for him to do something for them.
The artist employed diverse methods for these old paintings and birthed entirely different results. Such an array of diverse techniques shows the progression of his initial thoughts. These old paintings may have the addition of new subject matters, but their original tone remains mostly intact, the interpretation of the original structure, in terms of components, techniques, and the storytelling, before they are made anew.
In summary, this entire process is as if the markers of time are rubbed away and these artworks of the past, once again, become a part of the present day. This was not brought forth by the effort of just a single person, but by both of their creators, the past artists together with Tawatchai.
About Artist
Tawatchai Somkong was born in Mae Hong Son, Thailand in 1964. He graduated from Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, India in 1995. Five years of study and living in India changed his life, both in terms of art purpose and personal path as a human being. K.G. Subramanyan and Jogen Chowdery, two influential Indian artists, were the persons who guided his hand at the time.
Tawatchai started up Fine Art Magazine, The Great Fine Art Co., Ltd in 2003 believing that Thailand and its art community needed a quality art magazine to call its own. His desire to borderless open Thai people’s art knowledge led him to collaborate with world-class publishers such as TASCHEN, Phaidon Press and Quintnessence Editions to publish books in Thai language. He always pays close attention to every step of the process most of the times selecting each book himself. Tawatchai also founded Plato13 Publishing in 2013 to focus on philosophy and self-development, believing that creativity comes from a balanced state of mind.
Tawatchai’s vision of art and management expanded beyond his work as an artist and CEO of The Great Fine Art Co., Ltd. during the 2000s. He was on the judging committee of the National Gallery, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre and was on the panel of judges for Silpathorn Awards, organized by the Ministry of Culture’s Office of Contemporary Art and Culture. He has numerous curatorial experiences in both national and international art exhibitions. The most recent exhibition he curated is The Revolving World at Thai Pavilion, 58th Venice Biennale, and in 2021 ‘Butterflies Frolicking on the Mud: Engendering Sensible Capital’ – Thailand Biennale Korat, 2021. Despite his many responsibilities, he never gave up his passion for art and continued to exhibit his work consistently.
About MATDOT Art Center
MATDOT Art Center is a unique art space situated in the heart of Bangkok Old Town founded in 2020 by Tawatchai Somkong, Editor-in-Chief of Fine Art Magazine. It is intended to garner a connection with the art community from artists to curators, collectors, students, and aficionados alike. Contained within three buildings are a cafe, a studio, a meeting room, a co-working space, and even an accommodation quarter that is open to everyone. It is a space for people to gather and create, but is not limited to just the local community, it extends to the international community as well.
Besides the expertly curated works of art which are immersed in every corner of the premises, MATDOT Art Center also houses two exhibition rooms: the Blacklist Gallery showcases the works of local and international artists by invitation to promote an exchange of diverse knowledge; and the Matdot Gallery displays the works of the artist in residence.
